Perkins Sabre chosen for third
Gibraltar pilot boat
Twin Perkins Sabre engines are being used to power a new VT Halmatic 35, the third pilot boat to be supplied to the Gibraltar Harbour Board with Perkins Sabre engines. The M215C diesel engines are fitted with Twin Disc MG5050A gearbox, powering the 10.6-metre, GRP vessel to a top speed of 21-knots.
The M215C six-cylinder, six-litre engine, which is turbocharged and intercooled, develops its maximum power at a low-revving 2,500rpm and is one of the most compact engines in its class. John Birch of VT Halmatic, the UK's leading commercial and military boat builder, said: "We were looking for an engine that matched the boat's seagoing characteristics. The M215C is reliable, durable and responsive; it is ideal. The fact that it is great value for money, has extended service intervals, and a 400-hour oil change are just added bonuses."
The pilot boat has a semi-displacement hull - chosen for its excellent handling - a 3.6-metre beam, 1.1-metre draft and 9.5 tonne displacement. John commented: "The Perkins Sabre M215C is the perfect choice and has never let us down, so we have great loyalty to it."
